No. Your browser converts it right on your computer, so nothing is sent anywhere. It works for private and unreleased videos too, and with no wait for an upload.
WebM is the open video format of the web: Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Safari all play it, and VP9 looks as good as H.264 at a smaller size, so pages load faster.
About as long as the video plays, because every frame is encoded again as VP9. A smaller size under Size makes it faster. Keep the tab open until it’s done.
Pick 720p under Size and “Balanced” or “Smallest” under Quality, and remove the sound. Serve the WebM with an MP4 fallback for older Safari.
Often not at all. When the new format can hold your picture and sound as they are, they are copied over untouched, which takes seconds. When they have to be encoded again, it happens at high quality by default, and never at a much higher bitrate than your file had, so it doesn’t balloon in size.
